Router Settings for Smooth IPTV Streaming

A few router changes make a real difference to IPTV: put the router in a central, open spot, connect the TV device on 5 GHz or Ethernet, pick a less crowded Wi-Fi channel, use QoS to prioritise the TV if your router offers it, and keep firmware up to date. Menu names vary by router; look in the Wi-Fi, wireless or advanced settings.

1. Placement

• Central, raised and in the open — not in a cupboard or behind the TV.
• Away from microwaves, cordless phone bases and thick walls.
• As close to the main TV as practical.

2. Use 5 GHz for the TV

5 GHz is faster and less crowded than 2.4 GHz. If your router uses one network name for both bands (band steering), most devices choose sensibly; if your TV keeps landing on 2.4 GHz, create a separate 5 GHz network name for it. See Wi-Fi vs Ethernet.

3. Choose a quieter channel

Neighbouring networks on the same channel slow each other down. Many routers pick automatically; if yours doesn't, a Wi-Fi analyser app on your phone shows which channels are busiest.

4. Channel width

Wider channels (80 MHz on 5 GHz) are faster but more prone to interference in crowded buildings. If you see drop-outs, try 40 MHz for stability.

5. QoS / device priority

If your router offers Quality of Service or device prioritisation, give the TV device high priority. This helps most when others in the house are downloading, gaming or on video calls.

6. Firmware and restarts

• Update firmware — updates often fix Wi-Fi stability.
• Restart occasionally; some routers slow down after weeks without a reboot. A scheduled weekly restart at night is a good habit.

7. DNS
