IPTV data use depends on the stream's bitrate. As a rule of thumb: SD about 1–2 GB per hour, HD about 2–4 GB, Full HD 4–7 GB, and 4K about 11 GB per hour. A household watching several hours a day can use hundreds of gigabytes a month — worth checking if your broadband or mobile plan has a data cap.
Data per hour by quality
The formula is simple: Mbps × 3600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1000 = GB per hour.
| Quality | Typical bitrate | Data per hour |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 2–4 Mbps | about 0.9–1.8 GB |
| HD (720p) | 5–8 Mbps | about 2.2–3.6 GB |
| Full HD (1080p) | 8–15 Mbps | about 3.6–6.8 GB |
| 4K (2160p) | about 25 Mbps | about 11 GB |
Actual bitrates vary by channel and codec — see IPTV picture quality: resolution vs bitrate.
Monthly totals
| Viewing | HD | 4K |
|---|---|---|
| 2 hours a day | about 130–220 GB | about 660 GB |
| 4 hours a day | about 260–430 GB | about 1.3 TB |
| Two TVs, 4 hours each | about 520–860 GB | about 2.6 TB |
Data caps
Many home broadband plans are unlimited; some cable and wireless plans have monthly caps. If yours does, 4K viewing can reach it quickly. Our guide to broadband for 4K covers what to look for.
Mobile data
On a phone, an hour of HD can use over 2 GB. Choose SD versions of channels on mobile data, and use Wi-Fi for long viewing — see IPTV on Android phones.
How to reduce data use
- Pick HD instead of 4K when you don't need the extra detail.
- Use SD on phones and small screens.
- Stop playback instead of leaving a channel on in an empty room.
- Use efficient codecs — HEVC streams use less data for the same quality; see IPTV video codecs.
Speed vs data
Speed is how fast data arrives; data use is how much arrives in total. You need enough speed for smooth playback — see IPTV internet speed — and enough allowance for how much you watch. Our IPTV subscription streams every channel in several qualities, so you can pick the one that fits your data plan.
