A codec compresses video so it can travel over the internet. IPTV mostly uses H.264 (AVC) for SD and HD channels and H.265 (HEVC) for many 4K channels, because HEVC delivers similar quality at roughly half the bitrate. AV1 is a newer, royalty-free codec supported by recent devices. If a 4K channel won't play but HD works, a codec your device can't decode is the usual suspect.

Why codecs matter for IPTV

- Device load: newer codecs need more processing; without hardware decoding, playback stutters.
- Compatibility: a channel in a codec your device can't decode may show a black screen or play sound only.

When a channel won't play
- Try another player in your app — some have better codec support. See IPTV Smarters settings.
- Try the HD version of the channel (often H.264).
- Enable hardware decoding in the app (on computers, see IPTV on Linux for drivers).
