How IPTV apps on Smart TVs differ from phone apps

On Samsung and LG TVs, many player apps don't let you type a login on the TV. Instead, the app shows the TV's MAC address and a device key; you enter those on the app developer's website together with your playlist, and the channels appear on the TV after a restart.

These apps usually have a free trial and then a small one-time licence fee paid to the app developer — it's separate from your IPTV subscription. Android and Google TV sets work like a phone instead: you install the app from Google Play and log in directly.

Setting up IPTV on a Smart TV

1. Connect the TV to the internet — Ethernet if the router is nearby.
2. Install a player from the TV's app store (see the Samsung, LG or Android pages for which apps are available).
3. Open the app and note the MAC address and device key if it shows them.
4. Add your subscription: either on the app's website (MAC-based apps) or directly in the app with your Xtream Codes login or M3U link.
5. Restart the app and wait for the channel list and TV guide to load the first time.

If your TV has no IPTV app

Plug in a streaming stick. A Fire TV Stick or a Google TV streamer turns any TV with an HDMI port into an IPTV screen and often runs the player faster than the TV's own processor. Casting from a phone also works, but it ties up the phone.

Getting the best picture on a Smart TV

• Choose the 4K or FHD version of a channel only if your connection holds 25 Mbps or more; otherwise pick HD for a steadier stream.
• Turn off motion smoothing (“Auto Motion Plus”, “TruMotion”) if fast sport looks jerky or artificial.
• Many TVs' Ethernet ports run at 100 Mbps — still several times more than one 4K stream needs, and steadier than Wi-Fi.
